APA believes that the design of all parts of the visitor experience must work together to be most effective. This has led the firm to build a team of talented specialists and to develop key methodologies that create cohesive and engaging visitor experiences. They are a company of interpretive planners, exhibit developers, researchers, exhibit designers, graphic designers, interpretive writers, and project managers. They are also educators, composers, biologists, visual artists, amateur astronomers, theater professionals, architects, and naturalists.
In early-stage planning APA's team works to define and illustrate the vision of a project to reveal its potential, generate enthusiasm, and provide a means to test feasibility. Their planning process employs careful situation analysis, staff and stakeholder involvement, and solid creative work to establish a vision that is both realistic and imaginative. The final mix emerges as an illustrated expression of the experience visitors can expect, as well as a summary of the implications for architecture, programs, staffing and cost.
In the design phase of a project, APA's understanding of facility operations, combined with their knowledge of visitor motivation and behaviour, allows them to develop detailed functional programs that can guide the design of the site and the building as they are developed by the architectural/engineering team. The architectural background of key staff ensures the well-coordinated development of site, building and exhibits from the very beginning.
The company's exhibit design approach constantly searches for the possibilities to create delight and surprise that lead to comprehension. The search extends to almost any media or activity: everything from theatrical environments and live presentations, to interactive exhibits and artifacts, to interpretive trails and interactive computers. Their job is to provide the right mix that will appeal to people with a variety of learning styles, interests and ages.
Enclosed in the Appendix is a selection of past project summaries which demonstrate their most relevant experience in terms of project scope, scale and function. Aldrich Pears Associates' participation in this project will be led by Ron Pears, Principal-in-Charge. As a recognized leader in interpretive planning and design, Ron brings over 25 years of senior level experience in managing complex projects. He will maintain continual involvement in the client contact and creative direction of the project. APA's team will also include Marc Belanger, Planner and Designer. Marc's extensive experience includes significant work at key interpretive points in Atlantic Canada.
